What is a domain name?

Wondering what a domain name is? No, it's not the same as a URL, but it's close. A URL, or Uniform Resource Locator, refers to the entire website address including the colons and slashes. For example is a URL.

A Domain Name refers to your website's name and the bit after the dot (.), for example .com,, .org, .net. So is a Domain name.

Sounds lovely but it can be challenging to find a domain name that has not been already taken.
